My goodness. This place is still around. That actually makes me happy. I left a long time ago due to college overwhelming me, and now I'm in grad school which is mucho insane. I thought I'd drop by and say hello and see how things are going. I'm actually returning to LJ.

The Great Ship Debate [24 Nov 2005|10:04am]
jewelles2

We all know it. We all skirt the subject or go at it head on, but either way, it's there and it's thriving. It can be calm and it can be violent. What am I talking about?

Shipping.

For anybody (like myself) who is involved in other fandoms, in my case Phantom of the Opera (sometimes Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean), we know that shipping is not limited to merely the fandom of Harry Potter. For Phantom, there's the great debate as to whether Christine lives happily ever after with Raoul or comes back begging for more of the Phantom. In Pirates, we wonder if anything was going on between Elizabeth and Jack, and in Star Wars we all would like to know if Obi-Wan did in fact have a secret lovelife. However, Harry Potter is a different story.

When I first read the books, I thought to myself, "Okay, Ron and Hermione are so going to get together," and that was the facts of life. It didn't occur to me that people would think differently, and I just assumed that R/Hr was the only ship out there, that there was none else. Nearly everyone around me agreed and it was all good and peachy. Then I started joining HP communities online and was introduced to the idea of "shipping." I started searching for more communities to join and soon enough I came across H/Hr ship communities. I was astonished! Who on Earth would ever think that?

I started watching the communities I didn't join, including the H/Hr ones, and I came to see that these people were just like me; their ship was alive and well just like mine. But still I thought that they were wrong. I still think that to this day, though I am much calmer about it.

Then HBP came out. I assumed that this would finally be the book where Ron and Hermione got together (and some was proven true at the end, but I won't spoil anything in case you haven't read) and I got so excited about it. However, on my rounds of the HP communities about three or four days after the book came out, I was so astonished; on the H/Hr sites, there were rants about how people were calling H/Hr shippers delusional and how they were so incredibly dedicated to their ship that nobody was going to convince them otherwise. There were a few obscenities thrown in there too. I was sick of it.

Have you ever noticed that other fandoms have people who ship for multiple pairings? That NEVER happens in Harry Potter. You're either a H/Hr shipper or an R/Hr shipper, there's no multiple shipping. It drives me crazy that people can't just accept each other and not get into fights about it. Maybe it's that there's still possibilities for HP, that it could change by the end of the seventh book, that nothing's definite. But I just know that there will still be controversy after it comes out and people on whatever side "loses" or if both ships "lose", they'll complain.

I'm asking you all as fellow Harry Potter fans to support me in this. I encourage you to post your own article, or link back to me, in any HP communities you're involved in. I am not trying to "sink" ships or anybody's hopes, but together we can get rid of the nasty shipping that goes on in our amazing fandom. It's one of the largest, if not the largest, fandoms out there and it should be just as considerate of all its members as other, much smaller fandoms are.

Thank you!

-Jewelles, avid HP fan

Another rant I found shuffling through my archives. [21 Nov 2005|05:30am]

[ mood | sleepy ]

Within the first few pages of Sorcerer's Stone, she's having Hagrid allude to a character that you won't meet until the end of the third book. (Sirius is talked about throughout Azkaban but you don't really meet him until the bruhaha in the Shrieking Shack.) Once you get to Chamber, the kid gloves have come off and the forshadowing is flying around like so much...um..flying things. Yeah. Good to know that a lack of REM sleep doesn't affect my snappy prose stylings at all.

In Sorcerer's Stone, most of the little things I caught were just that. Little things in the context of the book itself that I'd forgotten she'd made reference to until they became important in later books. Dumbledore making reference to the letter that he left with Aunt Petunia, Hagrid giving Sirus back his bike, Fred and George being "twins" ( I can't wait for her to explain what that means. My working theory is that it's ultimately going to have something to do with why they are in the same year at Hogwarts and why they look so much alike.) It was little details like that there was really no reason to notice the first time around that really tickled my fancy this time.

In Chamber of Secrets the forshadowing gets a lot more sinister and while I loved the book and while the CoS movie was the film that really sold me on a Harry Potter film franchise, knowing what I know now, the book has a much darker bent. In my last Potter-post I discussed how Voldemort is always a threat to Harry and that he was never watered down as a bad guy. However, after reading 1/2 Blood Prince you realize just how much danger she was really putting Harry in very early on.

Riddle's diary, the first time I read the book, was, I thought, a really original and ingenious device. Now, however, knowing what the Riddle diary is, it gives CoS a very different feel. It also she'd more light on Dumbledore's belief that it is Harry's capacity to love that is his greatest weapon in his feud with the Dark Lord. In the Chamber of Secrets Harry is handling, dealing with and ultimately destroying one of the foulest inventions that the dark arts has ever cooked up. Harry doesn't wind up in the fetal position on the floor because, A.) he doesn't know what the diary is and B.) His best friend's sister is in mortal peril. He is so concerned about Ginny that he doesn't have the time or the inkling to worry about much else. This is a mindset that Voldemort has never known and will never know. In fact, given what we now know about Voldemort's psyche, it's very likely that the part of Voldemort that inhabits the diary believes that Harry is fighting his pet and his book out of a sense of destiny. He's not even using Ginny as bait per se. He baits Harry and Dumbledore in the message that he makes Ginny scrawl re: the final resting place of her bones but he's dragged her down there to eat her essence and strengthen himself.

Two other thoughts before I sign off, the first being that Gilderoy Lockheart is one of the few characters that the films have changed my visualization of in the books. There's just something about Kenneth Branaugh's portrayal of Lockheart that just rang disturbingly true. Maybe it's because he doesn't really have to act to play a convincing pompous ass with an undeserved since of self-satisfaction.

The last being yet another musing on whether Voldemort being Slytherin's heir actually means jack-diddly-hoo-ha-crap anywhere outside of his own mind and the minds of his followers. There is an implication in this book that Sallie himself might not have approved of Voldemort's method or his mantra. He was Godric Gryffindor's best friend don't forget. When Hermione brings up the Chamber in History of Magic, the ghost-professor's explaination includes the fact that tensions between Muggles and Wizards were particularly high when Hogwarts was founded. It is also specifically mentioned that Slytherin didn't want to teach muggle-borns specifically because he didn't trust them. Therefore, Slytherin himself might have been less of a biggot and more of a paranoiac. It's a pretty well established fact that Muggle born witches and wizards can be badasses. Hermione, Lily Evans/Potter, etc. If a war were to break out between the Muggle world and the Wizarding world, someone like Hermione's loyalties would be sorely tested. Does she side with the world she belongs in or with her muggle parents who have loved and cared for her all her life. Slytherin might have wanted to only teach fullbloods out of a fear of possibly arming foes of the wizarding world so to speak. That would also justify putting a creature as dangerous as a basilisk in the Chamber. Excessive, yes. Dangerous, yes. ended up doing a lot more harm than good, absolutely. However, it still might have been a plan crafted out of fear of witches and wizards siding with the muggles should things get bad.

The dogma itself though, when stripped of its context provides an excellent canon of bigotry and classism which Voldemort and his cronies have bought into completely. I for one, kind of like the notion that were the Dark Lord's deified ancestor to turn up in the modern age there would be an excellent chance that he'd be shocked and apalled by what his decendent was doing in his name.

I've been meaning to do this for a while now. Now that I hear rumblings of the community's dwindling I re-post this old LJ-Potter-ramble that I wrote shortly after "Halfblood Price" came out.

Any thoughts, comments what-have-you are both welcome and encouraged. I'm reposting this in an attempt to stir up activity in this community once more.

By-the-by, I still have yet to be sorted. :)

Respond if you want points from transfiguration. [19 Sep 2005|04:05pm]

wolfmoon123
Alright, For the two of you who actually saw fit to DO YOUR HOMEWORK, you have both earned gryffindor a grand total of 89 points. I congratulate you both. For the rest of you: If you have joined this community I would appriciate it greatly if you would participate more. I have a large project all ready to give you, but if I only have two, this won't be as fun for you. Either way, this is a chance to boost your house points considerably. I would suggest highly to the houses of Slytherlin and Ravenclaw to get more active. I would point out that this also means that Hufflepuff and Gryffindor should keep it up. Before I put up the new project, I am going to raise the stakes on this a bit. Whoever does the best job on this project will earn a total of 500 points to their house. This means that I wish to see real effort and competition. whoever is interested in earning these points, I highly recommend responding to this immediatly. If there are only two of you and both of you are from the same house, I apologize but I will need to wait a little longer before I post this activity. I don't mean to use this as a punishment, because you both are really active and I'm proud of you both, regardless of the fact that I'm a hufflepuff. So, If any of you wish to earn these points, respond asap!

New things [18 Sep 2005|01:18am]

mistressemi
I would like to move your attention to the information page. On there, you will find four new communities that are linked to this one:

The Daily Prophet
The Quibbler
The Dueling Club
and...
Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes

Daily Prophet: this is a section for news and such. This can be Harry Potter related, or not. You can even make up your own stories about the community and its members. Just make sure to mention in the subject that you wrote it yourself.

Quibbler: For gossip, again can be Harry Potter or community rated. Just be careful if you write your own. Make sure it's total roleplay so no one gets hurt or upset.

Dueling Club: A place for debates. These can be anything. You can debate the huge debates in the world, or you can debate whether Snape is evil, or whether Dumbledore is hot (:P). That's entirely up to you. Just play fair.

Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes: For humor. Not much else can be said about that one.

You'll find the information in the user info pages.

So go and have fun! Make sure you add them on!

Some things to say... [16 Sep 2005|01:41pm]

meangurrl
First of all, I want to give mistressemi major props for handling this community and not giving up on it.

Libero... stephanie, we'll miss having you, definitely... you share a lot of my views anyways and since I read your LJ i feel like i know you better than I actually do, but definitely participate when you can...

New members or those thinking of applying... watch the attitudes, seriously. When I first applied I was told that I was being too harsh and mean because I called the Hufflepuffs pansies, but a lot of people are saying things far worse than what I said. Everyone here has different opinions and we should feel okay expressing them but don't put other people down in the process. Just because someone is a slytherin doesn't mean they have to do their best to be evil, and being a gryff doesn't give you an excuse to be cocky. I want everyone to get along.

Also, i was thinking we might want to change the sorting app a little bit... I don't like how people can basically influence which house they are put into... the questions are all harry potter based, and I think it would be better to have more of a personality test... like the whole what would you do if you found 100 dollars on the ground kind of thing.

This is basically up to you Emi, but if you want me to look into modifying it, I can do that. And if you think our system is perfect as is, just tell me and I'll leave it be.

Thanks everyone.

Hey Emi, I'm stepping down as Deputy Headmistress. I haven't been active here in a while and I feel bad about it but I've been so busy lately I just don't have the time. Plus, the comm isn't nearly as active as I wish it was. Maybe things will pick up when GOF comes out. I just resigned as head mod at another comm for the same reasons so I figured I might as well do the same here. I intend to remain a member but I don't know how active I'll be. Hopefully things will pick up in the future.
